SUMMARY:The Road to Nationals Auto-X
DESCRIPTION:With Nationals approaching Labor Day week its time to start the prep work. This will be my first time, but by thinking ahead I should be ready both mentally and with the car. First step to take is annalyzing the driver and the car. Is the car setup right or still in need of adjustment. Nationals is only a month and a half away so ordering parts and tires now is important. Do the tires have enough tread or broken in properly. There is still a Divisional and ProSolo on the National's site if needed to break in a new set. The Driver is just as important as the car. Mentally preparing by taking the Dail In or Test-N-Tune course to learn how to setup the car and drive will greatly improve times and the feel of the car. Next, need to make sure to sign up and take advantage of every contingency qualified for http://scca.com/event.aspx?hub=3&event=15171. If I place in a top position and find that I left a new set of tires or cash sitting on the table becuase I didn't register would not be good. Last, making sure I have all the right tools and gear for the event. Bringing plenty of water, sun block and rain gear will ensure that the event goes well and help maintain focus for when driving on course. The most important thing to take away from the event is to have a good time, make some new friends and improve driving skills.

SUMMARY:Gymkhana Grid Competition and Other Ken Block Gymkhana News
DESCRIPTION:It's official, well sort of, Gymkhana is now a motorsport. Ken Block will be holding the "Gymkhana Grid and the Ken Block Invitational" December 3 & 4 at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale. The event will be the first-ever stadium style Gymkhana competition and will give competitors, both pro and grassroots, the opportunity to put their drift and grip skills on display for fans. The event will pit racers against Ken Block on an all new Gymkhana style course. See the full information and sign up here. DC Shoes is also giving the opportunity to ride along with Block on the Gymkhana 3 course, during filming. That's right all you have to do is submit your wild, crazy idea for a trick or location of the Gymkhana video and 1 lucky person will win a trip for 2 to watch 1 day of filming. Prizes will also be awarded for 2nd and 3rd place. Submit your idea for Gymkhana 3 here, but hurry looks like the contest ends tomorrow.

SUMMARY:May Autocross at Lincoln Air Park
DESCRIPTION:Sunday was the 2nd event of the year for the Project: BMW 135i STU car. It was the 2nd points event for the Nebraska SCCA region held on the Nationals site at Lincoln Air Park. It was a very moist day, with mist for most of the day causing very wet track conditions. Running in a class dominated by AWD vehicles, rain is not an ally for the BMW 135i. [caption id="attachment_247" align="aligncenter" width="450" caption="The Project: BMW 135i STU car at the NRSCCA May Autocross at Lincoln Air Park"][/caption] The rain caused for a very frustrating day, with cones on 3 of 4 runs and a spin on the other run, leaving no clean times for the day. However, it was a good learning experience for the car on the new setup in the rain on a great course, which hopefully will lead to improvements next time it rains at an event. Project: BMW 135i STU 2nd run in the wet. Not the best run of the day.

SUMMARY:Project: BMW 135i STU Update
DESCRIPTION:Thought i would give a quick update on the BMW 135i STU build project car. You can read the original write up here: Project: BMW 135i STU. I made a few changes this past weekend to the car putting on new brake pads and a new exhaust. [caption id="attachment_230" align="aligncenter" width="450" caption="Berk Technology Catback Exhaust installed"][/caption] The new exhaust is a Berk Technology Full Exhaust System (Resonated Midpipes w/ Street Peformance Muffler). The exhaust from Berk saves a great deal of weight over the BMW OEM midpipes and muffler. The exhaust also has a deeper exhaust note which is not too loud for street driving, but a big improvement over OEM for events with very little drone. The Berk exhaust fits perfectly with the BMW stock downpipes and was very easy to install. The stock brake pads were replaced with Cool Carbon pads which should give the car even more braking power. I've also noticed a much linear feel to the brakes, instead of an on/off like I had with the OEM pads. There is less initial bite which seems to make the braking more predictable. The Cool Carbon pads should also help reduce the amount of brake dust, which is a definite win! The 135i will be competing at the NRSCCA Solo Event this Sunday (May 16th) at Lincoln Air Park. GotCone blogger Jon Simmons will be the event chair and course designer, so look for a National level course and a lot of fun!

SUMMARY:Lincoln ProSolo
DESCRIPTION:SCCA ProSolo's always bring some fun action with cars going head to head on nearly identical courses and a drag strip start, last weekend's Pro Solo event held May 1st & 2nd, 2010 at Lincoln Air Park in Lincoln, NE was no different. There were some great class battles all weekend, which made for some great action. The Super Challenge ended with a blast of wind, sand and rain as Patrick Washburn, in his Lucky Lugnut Racing Honda Civic defeated James Wilson, the STX class winner in his Subaru Impreza WRX for the Super Challenge win. [caption id="attachment_210" align="aligncenter" width="450" caption="Patrick Washburn (ST Honda Civic) defeats James Wilson (STX Subaru Impreza WRX) in the Lincoln ProSolo Super Challenge"][/caption] Another great battle took place in STU between Team Gotcone driver Patrick Lipsinic and Vitek Boruvka. Pat and Vitek swapped places multiple times before Pat was finally able to pull out the win in the 2006 Subaru STi sponsored by Kartboy.com and GotCone.com on Kumho tires. Fellow Team GotCone driver Andrew Elias took 4th in STU. [caption id="attachment_211" align="aligncenter" width="450" caption="Team GotCone driver Pat Lipsinic drives 2006 Subaru STi in the ProSolo Super Challenge, Pat took 1st place in STU"][/caption] Team GotCone driver Christy Carlson took 3rd place in L2 in her 2006 Subaru STi sponsored by GotCone.com and Tarsust.com. Christy sat in first place after morning runs on Saturday, but fell to 2nd Saturday afternoon and Sue Eckles was able to edge out Christy for 2nd and a spot in the Ladies Challenge on Sunday morning. Other Team GotCone drivers Jon Simmons, took 3rd in STS, in a 1988 Honda CRX Si sponsored by tarsust.com and russgarage.com and earned himself a spot in the Super Challenge, where he was knocked out in the 1st round. John Hunter finished Saturday in 2nd place in STS but slipped down to 5th after red lighting and coning away his runs on Sunday morning. Mark Jorgensen took 6th in Bump Class 2 in his 2008 Dodge Viper sponsored by Woodhouse Motorsports on Hoosier Tires. Dave Iliff took 6th place in SM in his Subaru STi. Photos from both days of the event and the Challenges are in the Lincoln ProSolo Photo Gallery on the site.

SUMMARY:April Autocross at Air Park
DESCRIPTION:Sunday was my first autocross event of the year and first event in the BMW 135i with the new set up. The course for the first NRSCCA Solo Points Event at Lincoln Air Park was pretty long, with most times in the 75-95 second range. Was a great opportunity to get accustomed to the new setup and do some tuning on it. I had 2 other drivers driving the car, Jon S. (from Tarsust) was co-driving with me in STU and provided a lot of help and input on suspension settings and Dan H. drove the car in BSP. [caption id="attachment_152" align="aligncenter" width="450" caption="Dan H. driving the BMW 135i in BSP"][/caption] The car drives completely differently now. It is very stable and predictable which was a big change from the way it was previously. I spent most of the event adjusting to the changes and getting comfortable with the set up. I am excited to see what I will be able to do after a few events, when I am used to the changes. Here's a video of the car (Dan H. driving in BSP) taken with the GoPro HD camera. I also took photos of 2nd and 3rd heats, about 450 photos in the event photo gallery.

SUMMARY:2010 Texas National Tour
DESCRIPTION:Gotcone was at the Texas National Tour last weekend (March 27th & 28th) in Mineral Wells, TX taking photos. Wow, what a windy day Saturday was. The wind made it very challenging to get photos to turn out. You can check out the nearly 1500 photos in the gallery. [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="450" caption="Christy Carlson took 1st place in STUL at the Texas National Tour in her 2006 Subaru STi"][/caption] My 135i isn't quite ready for Autocross action, but GotCone blogger Christy Carlson took 1st place in STUL. Look for a recap of the event from her and some video of the STi in action coming today or tomorrow. Thanks to event sponsors Vorshlag, AST USA and Cobb Tuning for providing food and beverages on Friday and Saturday.

SUMMARY:First Rallycross of 2010
DESCRIPTION:There really is nothing like sliding sideways in a controlled environment, with clouds of snow billowing past your rear window. The rallycross crowd truly enjoys driving off road, especially in bad weather. The group was larger than our average attendance for all of 2009. The winds were fierce at times, but occasionally the sun would come out. My ninja photographer was present, covered up but not exactly blending in with the surroundings (dressed in black in a white-out environment). I had a co-driver, who proved to be exceptionally good his first time out. I also took out a new vehicle for the first time. The 98 Legacy had her first snow-cross outing. (I say first snowcross outing, because I know she's rallycrossed before, at least one time with a previous owner.) The ice proved a formidable foe to our all-season tires. Patience was needed around corners, making sure that at least one tire was on the powdery snow to the inside of the turn before getting on the throttle. Lessons from Team O'neil Rally School were used in full-force. Left-foot braking was a necessity! If you have never tried rallycross before, I urge you to come out and at least watch. Check your local region SCCA web page for local events, or the national site for regional/national info. For me personally, it was one of the best Valentine's days I've ever had.
