The Irish backstop has been highly controversial among some MEPs and is one of the main reasons why the Withdrawal Agreement has not yet been adopted by Parliament. The new Prime Minister Boris Johnson now says that the backstop is “dead”. The rest of this article explains how the political situation around the backstop has evolved over time and why the Irish border is an important topic. The Irish border has been eliminated by both Britain and the EU because of its importance to the peace process in Northern Ireland for a backstop. The Good Friday Agreement of 1998 was an important element of this peace process. One of the three main points of the agreement was the creation of infrastructure for “North-South cooperation” between the Irish Government and the newly created Northern Ireland Assembly. .
