Fort Riley just outside of Junction City, KS played host to the second event in the SCCA MidWest Divisional Solo series on July 19-20, 2014. Helicopters served as some unusual spectators to the event lining the far side of the course. Military personnel were encouraged to compete, spectate and ride along during the event. Just over 90 entrants competed in the 2 day event in a variety of classes including stock, prepared and modified.

No one can question Ken Block has been a dominating force at Rally in the 100 Acre Wood, winning a record 7 times. Not even a missing fender could slow down this Hoonigan in his Monster Energy World Rally Team Ford Fiesta rally car.

It was a hot sunny day on Sunday, July 13th out at Lincoln Air Park, but many braved the heat to take on the autocross course designed by Dave Fink. This was the 4th points event for the Nebraska Region SCCA. The next event will be August 10th at Lincoln Air Park. Photos from the event are posted in the photo gallery.
It’s Thursday, so that means another Throwback Thursday photo. This one is from my very first trip to SCCA Solo Nationals in 2007 at Heartland Park Topeka. Something about the positioning of the cone, the Subaru tripoding, the banners in the background, the sun glinting off the wheel, the big wing…. I don’t know it just screams AUTOCROSS! Still one of my favorites.

Throwback Thursday! Pike’s Peak International Hill Climb is this weekend, so let’s throw it back to 2011, my only trip to Pike’s Peak. I had an up close and personal encounter with David Kern’s EVO on a hairpin in the gravel section. This was the last year that there were any gravel road sections, immediately after the event they paved the rest of the road.
Jalopnik.com recently uncovered a 1980’s Autocross TV Special on YouTube. The special is over an hour of a local autocross event held in Evansville, IN entitled “Thunder on the Streets II”. The video includes RX-7s, Celicas, AE86s, Fox Mustangs, C4 Corvettes, and many other cars making their way through a sea of cones.
Since this video comes straight from the VHS tape it was recorded on it also includes all the 80stastic commercials, including one for a VCR for the low price of $299 (#aintnomoneylike80smoney).
We need something like this to happen again. Just think of the new eyes that would learn about grassroots racing and the options available to them. SCCA please make this happen! For now, please enjoy this video.
It was my first trip to Oregon and boy was it a good one! The Rally America Oregon Trail Rally started at Portland International Raceway with 4 stages that included some sections of the racetrack and some dirt/gravel sections. It is a great venue for spectators to see rally cars in action all around the stage and gave an interesting mix of surfaces that you don’t always get. Travis Pastrana took advantage of this format and jumped out to an early lead taking fastest times on 3 of the 4 stages.
